Unveiling ABBA’s “Lovelight”: A B-Side Gem

While ABBA is synonymous with chart-topping hits, some gems reside on the B-sides of their singles. “Lovelight” is one such treasure.

Composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the songwriting duo behind ABBA’s greatest triumphs, “Lovelight” boasts the infectious melodies and harmonious vocals that captivated audiences worldwide. Recording began in April 1978, with Benny on keyboards, Agnetha Fältskog and Frida Lyngstad sharing lead vocals, and the band’s usual crew of musicians rounding out the sound.

Originally titled “Heroes,” “Lovelight” didn’t find its place on any ABBA studio album. Instead, it debuted in January 1979 as the B-side to their global hit, “Chiquitita.” For some fans, this hidden gem became a favorite, showcasing a slightly different side of ABBA. The track’s upbeat tempo and heartfelt lyrics paint a picture of devotion and the feeling of being utterly captivated by someone’s love. Lines like “Don’t wanna lose your lovelight / How I remember the first time we went to a movie” evoke a sense of nostalgia and the transformative power of love.

Despite not being a formal single, “Lovelight” found a dedicated following. The song’s popularity led to an alternate mix being included on the 1993 compilation album, “More ABBA Gold.” This alternate version offered a slightly different listening experience for die-hard fans.

Though not as widely known as ABBA’s mega-hits, “Lovelight” serves as a testament to the band’s songwriting prowess and the enduring appeal of their music. This captivating B-side is a delightful discovery for casual listeners and a cherished treasure for devoted ABBA fans.
