“Closer Than Close” by the Bee Gees is a hidden gem nestled within their 1997 album “Still Waters.” Though the album itself has an interesting backstory, “Closer Than Close” stands out for a few reasons.

Originally conceived as “Love Songs,” the “Still Waters” project was a collection of new recordings and reimagined versions of songs the brothers Gibb had written for other artists. The record company wasn’t on board, and the project was shelved for a time.

However, the creative spark remained. The brothers recorded new material, including “Closer Than Close,” in 1994 and 1995. Notably, “Closer Than Close” features Maurice Gibb on lead vocals, a rare occurrence for the group where Barry typically took center stage.

Despite the shelving of “Love Songs,” “Closer Than Close” found its place on “Still Waters” – the last studio album the Bee Gees would release before their farewell tour, “One Night Only.” This tour, which took place in 1997 and 1998, became a celebration of their vast discography. Interestingly, “Closer Than Close” found new life during the tour, with a rare live performance featuring Maurice on vocals included on the “One Night Only” live album released in 1998.

“Closer Than Close” remains a poignant reminder of the Bee Gees’ talent for crafting heartfelt ballads. While not a chart-topping single, it stands as a testament to their enduring ability to create music that resonates with listeners on a deeper level.
