Introduction
“All For Love” is a power ballad performed by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting, released in 1993. It was featured in the soundtrack to the film The Three Musketeers.
The song was written by Bryan Adams, Robert “Mutt” Lange, and Michael Kamen. Kamen, who was composing the film’s score, initially envisioned a different kind of song for the end credits, perhaps with a female vocalist like Kate Bush or Annie Lennox. However, the project evolved, and Adams, fresh off the massive success of “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, became involved.
The idea to include multiple vocalists came about partly due to the impending release of Adams’ own greatest hits album. To avoid competing with himself on the charts, Kamen suggested bringing in other singers. This also cleverly mirrored the “three musketeers” theme of the film. Adams first contacted Sting, who agreed immediately, and then pursued Rod Stewart, who was initially hesitant about film work but was ultimately won over by the song.
The recording process took place in various locations, with Adams working with Sting in London and later with Stewart in Los Angeles. Adams’ vocals and the final mix were completed at his home in Vancouver. The music video, filmed at the Ritz Theatre in New Jersey, further cemented the song’s popularity.
“All For Love” became a massive international hit, topping charts around the world. Its success can be attributed to the combined star power of the three artists, the song’s catchy melody and anthemic feel, and its association with a popular film.
