Kane Brown Talks Fame, Family, and Facing Racism in Country Music
Country music superstar Kane Brown recently appeared on the Impaulsive Podcast, offering candid insights into his life, career, and the challenges he’s faced. From performing for 65,000 people to his personal fitness journey and dealing with racism, Brown spoke openly about what it’s like to be one of the most successful artists in music today.
From Viral Videos to Stadium Crowds
Brown’s journey to stardom is a testament to the power of social media. He started by posting cover songs on Facebook, long before TikTok became the dominant platform. “I was working three jobs… and I was trying to find out how to go viral on social media,” he explained. His videos started gaining hundreds of thousands of shares, quickly building a massive fanbase. This organic growth led to his first shows selling out in minutes, a sign of the massive following he had cultivated online.
Now, he’s performing at iconic venues like Ohio State’s Buckeye Stadium. When asked what it feels like to perform for 65,000 people, he admitted to still feeling a touch of imposter syndrome. “I’m the little guy up there,” he said. “I’m like, I hope they like me.”
Confronting Racism and Industry Challenges
Brown also spoke about the racism he’s experienced within the country music industry. He recalled two separate instances where songwriters refused to work with him because he is Black. “One writer… said he wouldn’t write with me ’cause I was black,” Brown revealed. He said another well-known writer, who had over 30 number-one hits, said the same thing. This individual later tried to collaborate with him after he became famous, but Brown refused.
These early challenges, along with the competitive nature of the music business, led to a period of mental health struggles. Brown mentioned how constant social media scrutiny and the pressure to maintain success can be draining. He found a new sense of purpose through a renewed focus on his physical and mental health.
A New Chapter: Fitness and Fatherhood
Brown shared that he’s been on a strict diet and workout routine, aiming for a “plastic toy soldier” physique. This transformation is part of a “rebranding” effort to have more energy on stage and to feel better mentally. He also expressed his love for his family, including his two daughters, and the joy of being a dad.
Despite his incredible success, Brown remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He views his journey as a message of hope, sharing that he once lived in a car with his mom and worked three jobs. Now, he’s a global superstar, proving that anything is possible.
