Kane Brown on Breaking the Mold and a Career-Defining Moment
Country music star Kane Brown is changing the face of the genre, and he’s well aware of it. In a recent interview, he opened up about people’s initial assumptions and a pivotal moment that made him realize he had made it in the music world.
When asked why people assume he’s “something different,” Brown, who is biracial with tattoos and piercings, compared himself to a zebra among horses. “It’s like the new face of country right there,” he said. His unique look and sound are a departure from the traditional country artist, but it’s a mold he seems more than happy to break.
Despite a journey that included stints on American Idol and The X Factor, Brown said the true realization of his success came just a few days before the interview. It was during his first sold-out show in New York at the Gramercy Theatre when Sony presented him with his first gold record. “That’s when it hit me,” he said. Brown plans to display the record “front and center” in his living room, a permanent reminder of the moment his hard work paid off.
