Kane Brown’s Tearful Tribute: The Emotional Story Behind “When You Forget”

Kane Brown’s new album The High Road closes with one of his most personal songs yet — “When You Forget,” a heart-wrenching ballad inspired by his grandfather’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

In an emotional Instagram post, the country star shared a photo of his grandparents and revealed the story behind the track, writing:

“The hardest working man I know and will ever know! I hope I can be half the man he is today.”

Brown admitted the song was the only one on the album that moved him to tears while writing it. “He’s been forgetting some things lately,” he wrote. “It’s a terrible disease, and I hope everyone going through the same thing my family and I are can relate to this song.”

The heartfelt tribute touched his entire family — especially his grandmother. In a recent interview with Holler, Brown recalled, “Getting to call my Nana and tell her we were going to write a song about him… you could hear her tearing up over the phone.”

Known for blending country, pop, and R&B, Brown often draws inspiration from his personal life. But “When You Forget” stands apart for its raw honesty and emotional depth. Fans are already calling it one of his most powerful songs yet — a reminder of how music can heal, connect, and honor those we love, even as memories fade.
