Paul Weller Covers Bee Gees Classic ‘I Started A Joke’ for Upcoming Album ‘Find El Dorado’

Paul Weller has unveiled his own rendition of the Bee Gees’ 1968 classic “I Started A Joke”, which will appear as a standout track on his forthcoming album Find El Dorado.

The cover follows Weller’s recent reinterpretations of “Lawdy Rolla” — originally recorded by obscure French studio band The Guerrillas — and “Pinball” by Brian Protheroe, continuing his exploration of reimagined classics that have shaped his musical outlook.

According to a press release, Weller’s take on “I Started A Joke” is described as “a centrepiece” of the new record, showcasing the singer-songwriter’s deep appreciation for timeless songwriting and melodic craft.

Speaking about the track, Weller admitted that he wasn’t actually familiar with the Bee Gees’ original version until much later in his career:

“It’s one of those tracks that almost makes you rethink your own writing,” he shared.
“It reinforces the value of a great melody. And perhaps with someone like Robin Gibb [on lead vocals], who didn’t play any instruments, that’s doubly important.”

The original song, written by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, first appeared on the Bee Gees’ 1968 album Idea and became one of their most emotionally resonant ballads, celebrated for Robin’s haunting lead vocal and introspective lyrics.

Weller’s version reportedly maintains the song’s melancholic spirit while infusing it with his signature soulful edge — bridging the gap between 1960s pop craftsmanship and modern British rock sensibility.

Find El Dorado, Weller’s upcoming studio album, is set to arrive later this year, promising a mix of covers and original material that highlight the Modfather’s ever-evolving artistry and reverence for great songwriting across generations.
