In a heartfelt interview marking the anniversary of Jeff Cook’s passing, Teddy Gentry, founding member of the legendary country band Alabama, opened up about the deep friendship and musical brotherhood he shared with Cook—one that spanned more than five decades.
“We started as kids chasing a dream,” Gentry recalled. “But we became family long before the world knew our name.”
Jeff Cook, who passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, was not only Alabama’s lead guitarist and fiddle player—he was its soul. Known for his musical genius and larger-than-life energy, Cook helped shape the signature sound that brought Alabama to the top of the country charts in the 1980s and beyond.
But for Gentry, the memories that linger most aren’t about awards or sold-out shows.
“I remember the long bus rides, the late-night jokes, and how Jeff would always pick up a guitar even after a 12-hour day,” he said. “He lived for the music—but even more, he lived for the people he loved.”
As Gentry shared stories—from fishing trips to writing songs in hotel rooms—his voice carried the kind of warmth and sorrow that only comes with true loss. He emphasized that Jeff wasn’t just a musical partner; he was the heartbeat of their group, someone who brought humor and harmony even in the toughest times.
“Jeff had a way of making everyone feel at ease,” Gentry added. “Even when his health declined, he never let it steal his joy. He gave everything until the very end.”
Now, as Alabama continues to honor Jeff’s legacy through tribute performances and fan events, Gentry says he feels his presence on stage every night.
“Sometimes I still hear his laugh in my ear monitors,” he smiled. “That’s how I know he’s still with us.”
