Introduction
The Oak Ridge Boys Honor Joe Bonsall and Celebrate Music at the CMA Awards
The Oak Ridge Boys made a heartfelt appearance at the CMA Awards, bringing with them a mix of joy, reflection, and gratitude. It’s been an emotional year for the legendary group following the passing of longtime member Joe Bonsall, but the spirit he left behind was very much alive on this special night.
Speaking on the red carpet, the group shared how Joe was more than just a frontman—he was the “Energizer Bunny” of the band, a true spark plug whose energy, humor, and friendship touched every aspect of their lives. “We laughed a lot with Joe and we cried sometimes, but he always brought joy,” they said. “He didn’t want us to sit around and mope. He wanted us to be happy. And that’s exactly how we plan to honor him.”
Joe’s presence on stage spanned over 50 years with The Oak Ridge Boys, becoming a defining part of their sound and success. Now, that legacy is being carried forward by 28-year-old Ben James, a devoted fan turned bandmate. “Joe was his hero,” the group explained. “He knows every part, every song, every harmony Joe ever sang—and we’ve sung with him for a year now without even needing rehearsal. That’s how well he knows Joe’s music.”
One of the most touching moments came when they revealed that, following his final Christmas performance, Joe personally called Ben James and gave him his blessing: “I’m done, get on your singing britches.” A passing of the torch that was both moving and meaningful.
The group also spoke about their latest project—an album dedicated entirely to mothers. Produced by Nashville’s own Dave Cobb, the album pays tribute to the women who shaped their lives. “It was Dave’s idea to do a full record honoring moms, and it really came together beautifully,” they shared.
Later in the evening, The Oak Ridge Boys took the stage to present the Vocal Group of the Year award—an honor they themselves know well. “We’ve been in that category, and it’s nice to present it now,” they said, smiling. “We’re just here to have fun and celebrate great music.”
Through laughter, music, and heartfelt memories, The Oak Ridge Boys reminded everyone why they’ve remained icons for so long. Even in moments of loss, they continue to uplift, inspire, and keep the music—and the memories—alive.
