The Tragedies Behind the Spotlight: The Untold Story of the Band Chicago

The legendary rock band Chicago, known for its signature blend of rock and brass instrumentation, has left a lasting mark on music history. However, behind their timeless hits and spectacular performances lies a string of heartbreaking tragedies that forever changed the lives of its members.

Terry Kath – a founding member and the musical soul of the band – was the first major loss. In 1978, after a party, Kath accidentally shot himself while recklessly playing with a gun. His sudden death at the age of 32 plunged the band into crisis. As Robert Lamm once said, “Terry was the rhythmic heartbeat of Chicago.”

Walt Parazaider, the veteran saxophonist and one of the original founding members, was forced to retire from live performances in 2017 due to a serious heart condition. In 2021, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, permanently ending any hope of his return to the stage.

Bill Champlin, who joined the band in 1981, endured unimaginable grief when his son Brad passed away from esophageal cancer. Just one day later, Bill himself was diagnosed with cancer and spent a year battling the disease through radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery.

Other members faced similar misfortunes. Laudir de Oliveira died on stage at the age of 77. Keith Howland was forced to leave the band after suffering a severe arm injury. Peter Cetera, the band’s breakout star, survived a life-threatening motorcycle accident that left him with 60 stitches on his face.

Jason Scheff, who replaced Cetera as lead vocalist, struggled with alcohol addiction during his early days in the band. Less than a year after joining, he checked himself into rehab. Thankfully, he recovered and has remained sober ever since.

Chicago is not just a music icon—it is a testament to resilience, loss, and the enduring strength of those who lived through fame, grief, and the harsh realities behind the stage lights.
