William Hugh “Billy” Nelson Jr., the eldest son of country music legend Willie Nelson and his first wife, Martha Matthews, was born on May 12, 1958, in Fort Worth, Texas. Growing up immersed in music, Billy often accompanied his father on tours and shared a deep bond with him. He pursued a career in music, collaborating with Willie on various projects, including a gospel-inspired album.

Despite his musical talents, Billy faced personal challenges. In the years leading up to his death, he struggled with depression and alcohol abuse. His marriage to Janet Caldwell ended in separation, and he underwent treatment for substance abuse. Tragically, on Christmas Day in 1991, Billy died by suicide at the age of 33 in his log cabin home in Davidson County, Tennessee. The loss deeply affected Willie Nelson and his family. Willie later completed and released the gospel album they had been working on, titled “Peace in the Valley,” in 1994, dedicating it to his son’s memory.

Billy’s daughter, Raelyn Nelson, has followed in her family’s musical footsteps, establishing herself as a musician in Nashville. She has spoken about her grandfather’s support and the pride he expresses in her achievements, reflecting the enduring legacy of Billy Nelson within the Nelson family.
