Randy Owen Opens Up About His Father: “The Pain Has Never Left Me”

Behind the spotlight of a country music legend lies a sorrow that time has never healed. Randy Owen — lead singer of the iconic band Alabama — recently opened up in a heartfelt reflection on the greatest loss of his life: the passing of his beloved father, Gladstone Owen. Though many years have passed, Randy admits the pain remains fresh, and it still haunts him every day.

Randy grew up on a small farm in Fort Payne, Alabama — a place where he learned hard work, family values, and a deep respect for the land from his father. Gladstone Owen wasn’t a famous man, but he was a devoted father who lived simply and honorably. He was the first to teach Randy how to play the guitar, igniting his passion for music and planting the seeds for what would become Alabama’s legendary career.

But life isn’t always filled with joyful melodies. When his father passed away, Randy was caught in the whirlwind of touring and recording. “I wasn’t there when he took his last breath,” Randy said with a heavy heart. “I thought I’d have more time… but time waits for no one.”

The guilt of not being there to say goodbye has deeply affected Randy, prompting him to re-evaluate his priorities. Since then, he’s made a conscious effort to spend more time with his family, return to his roots, slow down, and find peace within himself. Every time he steps on stage, he thinks of his father — the man who believed in him from the very beginning.

“I sing for him,” Randy says. “I sing with all my heart.”
