Introduction
“We Thought We Had More Time” — Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry Speak Out on Jeff Cook’s Passing
When news broke of Jeff Cook’s passing — the talented guitarist and co-founder of the legendary band Alabama — the music community was left stunned and heartbroken. But no one felt the loss more deeply than his closest friends and bandmates, Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry.
“We thought we had more time,” Randy shared emotionally in a private interview. “I kept thinking we’d have more nights to sit around, play music, laugh, and relive the old touring days. But now… all we have are memories.”
Jeff Cook was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012, though he didn’t go public with the news until several years later. Despite the toll it took on his health, Jeff continued to perform whenever he could. He didn’t want fans to see his struggle — only his passion, his music, and the familiar smile that lit up the stage.
Teddy Gentry, Jeff’s cousin and longtime bandmate, added with visible emotion, “Jeff wasn’t just a musical genius. He was the heart and soul of Alabama. We built something beautiful together. Losing him feels like losing a part of ourselves.”
Formed in 1969, Alabama carved an unforgettable legacy in American country music with countless hits and prestigious awards. Jeff wasn’t just the guy on lead guitar — he was the glue that held the dream together, the one who gave the band its signature spark.
Though Jeff is no longer with us, the music and legacy he leaves behind will live on forever. And in the hearts of Randy, Teddy, and all who loved Alabama, Jeff Cook will always be an irreplaceable part of the story — a friend, a brother, and an artist who will never be forgotten.
