A Full-Circle Moment: Singing for Alabama’s Randy Owen on the Country Music Cruise
Life has a beautiful way of coming full circle, often when we least expect it. Last night on the Country Music Cruise, I experienced a moment that felt less like a routine performance and more like a beautifully scripted milestone. I had the absolute pleasure of performing an intimate set for a couple sitting in the audience: Randy Owen, the legendary frontman of the band Alabama, and his wonderful wife, Kelly.

To understand just how much last night meant to me, you have to look back at where it all began.

Roots in Luverne, Alabama
Growing up in the small town of Luverne, Alabama, my childhood soundtrack was defined by two massive musical titans: Alabama and Hank Williams Jr. They weren’t just names on a record sleeve to me; they were hometown heroes.

Whenever either act performed anywhere near our corner of the state, my dad made it an absolute priority to take me to see them. Those concerts weren’t just entertainment—they were masterclasses that shaped my entire worldview of music.

“Their music played a foundational role in my early years, sparking a fire that eventually turned a childhood dream into a lifelong career.”

During my school days, I proudly performed classic Alabama songs with the FFA String Band. When I wasn’t on stage with the band, I was locked away in my bedroom, spending countless hours hunched over my guitar. I would spin Alabama records over and over again, desperately trying to match their chords, timing, and unmistakable country grit. They taught me how to play, even if they didn’t know it yet.

The Ultimate Validation
Fast forward through years of hard work, writing, and chasing the muse, and suddenly I am standing on a cruise ship looking at the very man who inspired it all. But the magic didn’t stop at just having him in the crowd. After all these years, Randy looked at me and shared how much he truly enjoys one of my songs.

He and Kelly both expressed their deep love for “Thank You Lord,” a piece of my heart that I had the privilege of co-writing alongside the immensely talented Cheryl Riddle and Mo Pitney.

Getting the chance to look Randy Owen in the eye and sing that specific song directly to him last night was an incredibly humbling and memorable experience. It was a stark reminder of why we write songs in the first place—to connect, to heal, and to give thanks. Last night is etched into my memory forever, serving as proof that the songs you play along with as a kid might just lead you to the heroes who wrote them.
