Unwrapping the Joy: A Look at ABBA’s “Little Things”

While ABBA fans might associate their music with infectious dance beats and soaring vocals, their 2021 song “Little Things” offers a heartwarming departure. Released on their comeback album Voyage, the song became a surprise Christmas gift for their dedicated audience.

But “Little Things” has a deeper history. The melody finds its roots in “Godnattvisa” (“Lullaby”), an instrumental piece by Benny Andersson, one-half of ABBA’s legendary songwriting duo (alongside Björn Ulvaeus). “Godnattvisa” was released in 2007 with Benny Anderssons Orkester, showcasing a softer, more introspective side of Benny’s musical style.

Years later, Benny and Björn revisited this melody, weaving in new lyrics by Björn that captured the simple joys of Christmas. “Little Things” doesn’t boast about extravagant gifts or grand celebrations. Instead, the song focuses on the magic found in everyday moments – the crackling fireplace, the twinkling lights on the tree, and the precious time spent with loved ones.

Agnetha Fältskog and Frida Lyngstad, the iconic voices of ABBA, deliver the song with a tenderness that reflects the lyrics. The addition of a children’s choir adds a touch of innocence and wonder, perfectly capturing the spirit of the season.

“Little Things” stands as a testament to ABBA’s enduring ability to connect with listeners. Whether it’s a dance floor anthem or a heartwarming Christmas ballad, their music continues to resonate with generations, reminding us to cherish the simple joys in life.
