The death of Elvis Presley in 1977 shocked millions of people around the world. To his fans, he was more than a singer. He was an icon whose image had become larger than life. Yet behind that famous image was a complicated reality, and some people who knew Elvis and followed his life closely believed that his final days raised questions that were never fully answered.
Maria Columbus, who had served as president of an Elvis Presley fan club for two decades, recalled the confusion that followed the announcement of Elvis’s death. Like many devoted fans, she and her friends were deeply shocked. They immediately tried to contact members of Elvis’s family, hoping to understand what had happened. Eventually, they spoke with Vernon Presley, Elvis’s father.
According to Maria, Vernon asked them not to travel to Memphis immediately. He explained that the situation was extremely emotional and chaotic, and that he would not have enough time to meet with them. Instead, he suggested that they come about a week later.
When Maria finally arrived, however, the atmosphere did not feel the way she had expected. Rather than the quiet, solemn environment she imagined surrounding the death of such a legendary figure, she described a strangely festive scene. Visitors gathered around the cemetery, while vendors sold drinks and popcorn. People even took photographs with the guards stationed near the mausoleum.
For Maria, something felt deeply unusual.

Her concerns grew several months later when she obtained what she believed was an inventory of Elvis Presley’s estate. The document reportedly contained dozens of pages, but Maria noticed that a number of important possessions appeared to be missing.
Among the items she expected to see were Elvis’s personal diaries and journals. She also questioned the absence of an airplane that she believed should have been included. The jewelry listed in the inventory also seemed surprisingly limited for someone as wealthy and famous as Elvis.
Perhaps most striking to her was the apparent absence of family photographs. Maria remembered Elvis having numerous photographs of his mother, Gladys, as well as pictures connected to his daughter, Lisa Marie. Their omission from the inventory added another layer of uncertainty in her mind.
None of these details, by themselves, proves that anything unusual happened surrounding Elvis’s death. Missing records, incomplete inventories, and confusion after the death of a celebrity can have ordinary explanations. Nevertheless, for longtime fans like Maria Columbus, these inconsistencies contributed to a lingering sense that the public story did not contain every detail.
Elvis Presley left behind music, memories, and an enormous cultural legacy. But decades after his death, questions about his final days continue to attract attention. For some people, the mystery lies not in what is known about Elvis, but in the gaps between the pieces of the story.
